Chance to Shine is delighted to announce that they are one of the chosen charities of Alastair Cook's benefit year.

The England Captain, who recently passed 8,000 Test runs, has picked Chance to Shine as one of the four charities to benefit from the year.

Cook has been a long time supporter of Chance to Shine. He has visited several Chance to Shine schools as part of the annual National Cricket Day event and has twice leant his cookery skills to the annual 'Chance to Dine' cook off.

Talking about his benefit year, Alastair Cook said, "I am honoured to be awarded a Benefit Year by Essex. I'm determined that the year will be fun and I also pledge to donate at least half of the money raised to my four chosen charities personal to me; David Randall Foundation, Chance to Shine, Outreach Uganda and Mind."

Chance to Shine Chief Executive, Wasim Khan MBE, said, "We are delighted that Alastair Cook has chosen Chance to Shine as one of the charities for his benefit year. The money raised will allow hundreds of children to have the opportunity to enjoy and learn through cricket."

Essex chief executive Derek Bowden said, "He is a player with immense talent and has proven to be one of the best cricketers Essex County Cricket Club has ever produced."

"He has always shown his admiration for Essex and is a role model for supporters of the club at all ages.

"I'm sure I can say on behalf of the club, members and supporters that we wish Alastair the best of luck for 2014."

There are three upcoming events that Chance to Shine supporters can get involved in:

- 11th April at Chelmsford. Dine with Alastair to launch the year and look out for a Q&A with a special guest.
- 24th April in the Nursery Pavilion, Lord's. Join current and former England stars at the event hosted by former England capain Nasser Hussain
- 14th July at Lord's. Spend an evening at the historic venue in the company of Alastair and his international and county team mates.
